Meet the Animals
Sum Ranch is home to goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, hatch projects, and a rotating cast of tiny ranch weirdos. Some animals are part of carefully planned breeding programs, some help keep the ranch running, and some simply arrived here because we completely fell in love with them.
Life here revolves around sunrise feedings, muddy boots, hatch days, evening coop rounds, and the constant negotiation between humans and animals who routinely ignore our plans and invent their own. Every section of the ranch has its own rhythm, personality, and occasional chaos, and honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Rainbow Eggs • Hatch Projects • Heritage Breeds
The Flock
What started as six chickens for fresh eggs turned into breeding projects, incubators, hatch days, and an ever-growing collection of birds with wildly different personalities and exactly zero respect for our carefully planned gardens.
Today, our flock includes beautiful Ayam Cemani, Black Copper Marans, Easter Eggers, heritage breeds, and our beloved mixed barnyard crew. Somewhere along the way, the “goth flock” happened too (Crypt Walkers, Ghost Zombies, and Blue Astrolorp) , because apparently one dramatic black chicken leads directly to an entire tiny dinosaur breeding program. Alongside them, our Muscovy ducks contribute rich eggs, excellent pest control, and ongoing reminders that ducks will absolutely lay eggs anywhere except where you hoped they would.
Our goal is to produce healthy, hardy birds with beautiful egg color, strong genetics, good temperaments, and the kind of personality-filled flock that thrives in Northern New Mexico’s high desert climate. Every day brings a rotating rainbow of eggs ranging from deep chocolate brown and olive green to pale blue, cream, blush pink, and speckled tan.
Fresh eating eggs are available year-round through our self-serve farm stand and seasonally at our local farmer’s market, and we are continuing to expand our breeding and hatch programs for future hatching eggs, chicks, and carefully selected birds. Between incubators humming, broody hens trying to hide their favorite eggs, and at least one chicken regularly ending up somewhere impossible, the flock has become its own tiny ecosystem of chaos, feathers, and breakfast.
Luna Azul Nigerian Dwarf Goats
Luna Azul is the ADGA-registered Nigerian Dwarf herd at Sum Ranch, built around strong milk lines, excellent temperament, solid structure, and goats that make us stop mid-chore just to admire how cute they are.
Our foundation does, Sunny and Blue, joined the ranch in 2025 through the wonderful folks at Prairie Wood Ranch in New Mexico. Since then, the herd has quickly become one of the most loved (and most spoiled) parts of life here.
We focus on small-scale, ethical breeding with an emphasis on healthy animals, strong genetics, friendly temperaments, and beautiful, correct Nigerian Dwarfs that can thrive as milk goats, companions, performance animals, or future breeding stock.
Our Herd Philosophy
At Luna Azul, our goats are raised in small numbers with a lot of hands-on care, attention, and daily interaction. They are handled regularly, fed high-quality nutrition, provided routine veterinary care, and raised in a calm environment where personality matters just as much as pedigree.
We love good genetics.
We also love goats that sprint sideways for no reason, climb impossible objects, and scream dramatically because breakfast is thirty seconds late.
Honestly, both things can coexist beautifully.
Sunset Plains Vintage SunSprite (“Sunny”)
Sunny is our steady, confident, endlessly sweet red-gold doe from Sunset Plains Vintage. She came to us through Prairie Wood Ranch and immediately became part of the family.
Sunny comes from proven dairy and show lines, including champion genetics on both sides of her pedigree. Her lineage includes Copper Penny TF Silver Legacy and CH Sunset Plains Red Dazzle, bringing together strong milk potential, balanced structure, and excellent temperament.
In true overachiever fashion, Sunny delivered healthy Summer Solstice twins on June 21, 2025:
Luna Azul Phoenix Briar
Luna Azul Nova Litha
Sunny is everything we hoped for in a foundation doe: attentive mother, easy keeper, and calm personality.
Prairie Wood Blue Lore (“Blue”)
Blue is our striking chocolate cou clair doe with blue eyes from Prairie Wood Ranch. She is a little more thoughtful and reserved than Sunny, but once treats appear, she suddenly remembers we are her favorite people.
Blue’s pedigree is packed with strong Prairie Wood and Promisedland genetics, including:
CH Prairie Wood Maddox
SG Promisedland RC Bonafide ++B
multiple Grand Champion animals in her immediate lineage
Her lines are known for excellent structure, dairy strength, production potential, and beautiful conformation. Blue represents an important part of the future of Luna Azul, and we are excited to watch her mature.
Prairie Wood Nova Litha
Nova Litha was born at Sum Ranch on the Summer Solstice, June 21, 2025, and immediately made it clear she intended to run the place.
Sunny arrived here already bred to outstanding Prairie Wood genetics, giving Nova exceptional Prairie Wood and Sunset Plains lineage while also becoming an important part of the future vision for our Luna Azul herd program. Her pedigree includes strong dairy, production, and conformation lines with multiple champion animals behind her.
Nova is smart, fearless, wildly curious, and fully convinced that gravity is more of a suggestion than an actual rule. She spends most of her time launching herself off stumps, climbing anything remotely climbable, racing the other goats at full speed, and investigating absolutely everything happening on the ranch.
As she matures, Nova is expected to become part of the Luna Azul breeding program in 2026 or 2027. We are especially excited about her combination of athletic structure, outgoing personality, and strong foundational genetics.
Fall 2026 Kids
In Spring 2026, we were fortunate to bring in Sunset Plains ITD Dew It Again (“Rufus”) as a sire for hire for both Sunny and Blue. Rufus carries exceptional Wood Bridge Farm and Alethia genetics, with champion and superior genetics animals heavily represented throughout his pedigree.
His lineage includes:
Alethia V It Takes Dew
multiple Wood Bridge Farm champion lines
strong dairy, production, and conformation genetics across generations
We are expecting ADGA-registerable kids in early October 2026 and are incredibly excited about these pairings. Our goals with these breedings are balanced structure, strong milk potential, excellent temperament, and healthy, correct Nigerian Dwarfs suited for both homestead and performance homes.
Future kids may be available as:
registered ADGA breeding stock
companion goats
small homestead milk goats
potential 4-H projects
Phoenix Briar
Phoenix Briar was born on the Summer Solstice in 2025 and immediately became impossible not to adore.
Originally we considered selling as a potential herd sire, but his sweet personality quickly won us over completely, and we ultimately decided to keep him as a companion wether instead. He is playful, affectionate, endlessly curious, and firmly believes every human exists specifically to provide him attention.
KuneKune Pigs
Our KuneKune adventure started in 2025 with two very spoiled little pigs and rapidly turned into a full appreciation for one of the sweetest heritage breeds out there.
KuneKunes are known for their gentle personalities, grazing ability, manageable size, and incredible temperaments. They are intelligent, social, expressive little creatures that somehow manage to be both adorable and deeply committed to redecorating every muddy area on the ranch.
Honey and Goldie (Government names Lady Honeysuckle Figlet of Fluffshire and Princess Marigold Fluffington the Fair) were our first girls and completely sealed the deal for us. While they are pure KuneKune pigs, they are not AKKPS registerable because their parent pigs were registered under different registries, including AKKPS and AKPR/IKHR. We confirmed this directly while researching registration options for future breeding plans. Even without registration eligibility, they are beautiful examples of the breed and will produce wonderful companion and homestead piglets.
After falling completely in love with the ladies and researching the importance of preserving heritage bloodlines, we expanded the herd with registered AKKPS pigs through our Sum Ranch breeding program. We are proud lifetime AKKPS members and participate in preserving and responsibly breeding quality KuneKune lines.
Duchess Daisy and Sir Snort, Duke of Hamsterdam arrived together in 2026 from BOKY Ranch, bringing some truly beautiful heritage lines to the ranch along with significantly more pig-related fun than we were previously managing.
Sir Snort is currently covering Daisy, Honey, and Goldie, and we expect both AKKPS-registerable piglets from our registered pairings and non-registered companion or homestead piglets from Honey and Goldie in Fall 2026.
